Biotin For Hair Loss – Is Taking it a Waste of Time?
It is rumored that taking biotin for hair loss can help, but can it or is it just an old wives tale? Well, the answer you will be pleased to hear is that it can help, but not necessarily on its own and here I will explain how you can benefit from taking biotin for hair loss and what you should take with it.
First of all biotin itself is a vitamin, it is actually vitamin H but it is really a B vitamin (I know that sounds weird) and B vitamins are strongly linked with good hair growth. And, as well as good hair growth it is linked with helping to grow healthy skin and nails too. It is probably best to get biotin as a supplement because even though it is available in food like liver and eggs, you would have to eat huge quantities to get the recommended amount which is about 5mg a day.
Biotin works by assisting the body to metabolize things such as fats, carbs and proteins, all of which are essential to building healthy cells, and this is why people taking it find they have stronger hair and nails. It also helps increase the elasticity of the hairs cortex which helps to prevent further breakage, and finally it thickens the hair cuticle, this in turn gives the appearance of thicker fuller hair.
So biotin for hair loss is effective, but as stated earlier it is best if used with other vitamins, minerals and herbs especially if the hair loss is through genetic factors. The reason I say this is that most people lose their hair when DHT thins out the hair follicle, then you need something to combat the DHT too. DHT in case you are unaware is when testosterone combines with the enzyme 5 alpha reductase, and people who are genetically sensitive to DHT are the ones who suffer hair loss.
To date research is showing that minerals that are helpful in fighting hair loss are zinc and magnesium, and again supplements are probably needed here as the western diet is severely lacking in these minerals, particularly magnesium. There are a lot of herbs that are know to help against hair loss, but the main two that are worth noting are saw palmetto and nettle, as one helps inhibit 5 alpha reductase and the other mops up free testosterone.
Finally there is something called Minoxidil, which at present is one of the most exciting discoveries in the fight against hair loss. The reason researchers are so excited about this is because of way it mops up DHT in the bloodstream before it gets anywhere near the follicle.
